What is hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a state of inner absorption, concentration and focused attention.  It is a natural physiological phenomena, related to a deep state of relaxation, but also a state of heightened focus.  We experience varying states of hypnosis on a daily basis.  If you have been deeply absorbed reading a great book, watching a riveting movie, or engrossed in a stimulating conversation where the hours seem like only minutes have passed you have experienced common everyday hypnotic states.  Clinical hypnosis is a therapeutic tool that generally focuses on and amplifies peoples strengths.  When a person discovers the ability to manage pain without drugs or move comfortably through situations that used to cause panic they are connecting with and enhancing the healthiest parts of themselves.

What does it feel like to be in hypnosis?

Hypnosis feels like being incredibly relaxed  and you are more open to suggestion.  You are more receptive to positive thoughts and suggestions, which can help to modify or enhance your behaviors.  Most people find being hypnotized to be a very pleasant, relaxing experience.

How does hypnosis work in a session?

I help facilitate the patient to begin experiencing a relaxed state generally through deep breathing, stimulating the imagination through mental and guided imagery,  allowing  a state of deep relaxation or trance.  Ideas or suggestions that are compatible with the patients goals are presented.  Therapeutic suggestions are given for positive improvement and change, and than additional suggestions are given which will stay with you after you leave the session.  Hypnosis avoids the critical thoughts of the conscious mind.  The majority of people remember everything that occurs in a hypnosis session.

Will hypnosis make me do anything I don’t want to do?

You cannot and will not ever be asked to do something that you are not comfortable with.  You remain throughout the entire process in control of what you chose to accept.    You are able to come out of the state of hypnosis, at any point, at will.

What if I can’t be hypnotized?

Clinical evidence suggests that almost all people have the ability to experience a trance of some level or another.  Most clinical work is effective when the patient experiences a light or medium trance.
